Even though I’ve had better trip prior to this one, as I regurgitated the happenings to my wife, I realized that I am starting to enjoy golf much more than I thought I was.

See, I’m a computer programmer and business strategist so I consider business as my sport of choice.  I end up thinking about business all day and all night.  I literally can’t even stare at a blank wall without thinking how much it cost to put it together and the profit margins that the construction people, management and companies involved made… each of them.

It’s too much.

During my round, though, I realized I didn’t have time to think about business. I was forced to consider my swing, muscle memory, grip, the wind, distance, breathing. There was no place for profit margins, ROI, and conversion rates.

Thus began my fascination. I couldn’t stop thinking about golf. I needed something other than business to think of and golf was the perfect solution considering it could be done solo or with friends or family.  The best thing about being an amateur golfer is the prices don’t dictate my enjoyment of the game.

So, today I went out to a driving range while my pregnant wife sat in the chair behind me and we talked about family stuff. We went to one of the cheapest places in town. I used my analytical brain to attempt to decipher why I sliced the ball.  I used my high school athleticism to work on muscle memory. And when I got tired of driving and using a seven iron, went and practiced my putting.  All this for just $10 for a large bucket of balls, about an hour and half, and short drive into a risky neighborhood.  I even practiced in my bare feet and jeans because it was just that crappy of a driving range.

And I loved every minute of it.

No migraines. No $200 flights and $95 rounds.

I don’t think I’ve enjoyed spending ten dollars as much as today.

The simple beauty of your surroundings are a great accompaniment to the idea that you’re playing one of the greatest games on earth on courses where some of the greatest players have ever set foot. Myrtle Beach has been called the “Golf Capital of the World” because of the 120 golf courses located there, the record 4.2 million rounds played, and many miniature golf courses. 3.7 million total rounds of golf were played in 2007. The majority of the area’s golf courses are open to the public.
